In 2019 the faculty of Central voted to adopt the One Body Initiative. Envisioned by Central Provost Dr. Robert E. Johnson, this initiative enacts a new model of community formation that aligns with the seminary’s evolving geography. A plethora of teaching locations coupled with an online student body means the Central community is scattered all around the US and the world. A re-imaging of spiritual formation for such a diverse student body was imperative.
The One Body Initiative moves the seminary away from the concept of a single group that is tasked with planning and promoting all spiritual formation activity for all of Central’s community. The coordination and facilitation of formative activity can now be dispersed to teams based on geography and interest. This newer organization better recognizes that Central is composed of many local and special-interest communities. Together they form the “One Body.”
Putting the new formation model into practice is ongoing. A coordinating team will examine the spiritual formation activity occurring among the seminary’s varied locations and groups. After that initial study, the team will make further recommendations to motivate and encourage students and faculty members to participate in the One Body vision.
With a mission focused on education and a vision for formation wherever our students may be, the seminary believes the call in 1 Corinthians 12:27 can happen, “Now you are Christ’s body, and individually members of it.”
