Another Way to Serve
On November 6, Central Seminary MDiv students studying in Korean, primarily at our Dallas site, were invited for a day of listening and learning at Methodist Dallas Medical Center (MDMC). MDMC is a general hospital known for excellent care through the chaplaincy department, wellness department, and Faith Community Nursing department. These departments form an interdisciplinary, cross-functional team that collaborates to take care of patients, medical staff, and the community.
Hospital staff hosted students preparing for pastoral ministry with a day of presentations providing students with an introduction to general ministry in a hospital setting.
Katherine Tang, director of the chaplaincy department said that through the clinical pastoral education and chaplaincy training required to become hospital chaplains, students will ultimately be able to find and understand themselves and their deep pain and sorrow.
Caesar Rentie, vice president of the chaplaincy department, shared extensive views on chaplains based on his experience working at this hospital for 18 years.
Sean Camarillo of Golden Cross Academic Clinic, in charge of outpatient chaplaincy, said that the advantage of being an outpatient chaplain is that you can form a long and lasting relationship with patients compared to those in an inpatient setting.
Brett Alana Stanley, MDMC’s director for wellness for Methodist Health System, introduced a care program for employees that is not limited to patients but consists of various methods and components. Students were able to see a program structure that clearly shows that employees’ health is recognized as a fundamental part that directly impacts patients and that efforts are being made to create a healthy working environment and stress management.
John Phillips, president, said his role is to create the company’s culture and atmosphere and is to ensure that everyone they encounter at the hospital experiences hospitality and care.
Candace Funderbirk, director for care management and Rev. David Impwi took the time to introduce the care program for employees and the care program for hospice and palliative care patients. A student and Christian pastor asked whether there is any difficulty in providing Christian care rather than evangelism to patients of other religions, and David responded that his role as chaplain was not to evangelize or recommend religion, but to provide care for patients themselves. He answered that it is to be with the patient so that they can find peace, and that it is to share the love of Christ that he has.
Faith Community Nursing Department project manager Debbie introduced the social welfare system in which professional nurses provide health counseling and care to vulnerable people in connection with local churches. In the following session, we had a look around the inside of the hospital with the help of staff chaplains.
Samuel Park, professor of practical theology and contextualized ministry education, and director of Korean programs at Central Seminary, said about the visit, “Christian ministry is needed in various areas in the future, and we wanted to challenge MDiv students by showing them the field of chaplain ministry, which is receiving a lot of attention in today’s times. I am grateful to the many staff members and others for their hard work. It was a time of great challenge for the students in their consideration of becoming hospital chaplains,” he said.
All students expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity to learn about the various caring ministries that can be performed within the medical system and for the efforts of the hospital staff. Among the students who participated, Ha-eun Go said, “What struck me most was the explanation that our job is to accompany people who come to this hospital with fear, sadness, worry, and tension, and to be there for them as a pastoral presence.”
“It is surprising and impressive that a system that can provide such overall care has been established and put into practice,” said student Kim Soo-hyun. He added, “the way to practice God’s love without religious coercion or recommendation is spread throughout society in various forms. I was surprised that it could exist, and it seems like my options after graduating from undergraduate school have increased.”
11월 6일 월요일에는 캔사스에 본교를 두고 122년째 신학교육을 제공하고 있는 센트럴신학대학원이 이번 가을학기에 달라스 분교 및 시카고, 애틀란타, 엘에이, 어스틴 등 각지에서 공부하는 MDiv 학생들과 함께 Methodist Dallas Medical Center(이하 MDMC)의 원목 부서에서 병원 Chaplaincy 및 다양한 케어 시스템에 대한 세미나를 개최했다. MDMC는 원목부, Wellness Department, Faith Community Nursing 등 각 부서가 학제간의 교차 기능적 팀을 이루어 협업을 통해 환자, 의료진, 그리고 나아가 지역사회까지 돌보는 훌륭한 케어시스템 구축으로 손꼽히는 종합병원이다.
11시부터 오후 4시까지 이어진 이 세미나에서는 병원 케어 시스템의 각 부서 실무자들이 준비한 프레젠테이션을 통해 전반적인 사역소개와 교육으로 구성되었다. 목회사역을 준비하고 있는 MDiv 학생들에게 원목부의 디렉터 Katherine Tang은 병원의 원목이 되기 위해 필수적으로 이수 해야 하는 임상목회교육과 원목 사역을 통해 궁극적으로는 자기 자신, 자신의 깊은 고통과 슬픔을 찾고 이해할 수 있다고 설명했다. 원목부 Vice President인 Caesar Rentie는 이 병원에서 18년간 근무하면서 겪은 경험을 바탕으로 채플린에 대해 폭넓은 견해를 나누어주었다. 외래환자 원목을 담당하고 있는 Golden Cross Academic Clinic의 Sean Camarillo는 외래환자 원목을 통해 내원환자 대비 길고 지속적인 관계를 맺을 수 있다는 장점을 전했다. 또 채플린의 역할을 대상자와 함께 동행하며 여행하는 사이로 비유했다. MDMC의 Director for Wellness for Methodist Health System인 Brett Alana Stanley는 돌봄의 대상을 환자로만 국한하지 않고 다양한 방법과 구성으로 이루어진 직원대상 돌봄 프로그램에 대해 소개했다. 직원들의 건강이 환자들에 직접적인 영향을 주는 근본적인 부분으로 인지하고 건강한 근무환경과 스트레스 관리에 힘쓰고 있음을 여실히 보여주는 프로그램 구성을 볼 수 있었다. 병원장 John Phillips과 함께 MDMC가 지향하는 방향성에 대해 이야기 하는 시간을 가졌는데 병원장으로써 자신의 역할은 회사의 문화와 분위기를 만들어 가는 것이라고 하였다. MDMC가 지향하는 문화와 분위기는 병원에서 마주치는 모든이들이 환대와 돌봄을 경험할수 있도록 하는 것이라고 밝혔다. 이어서 Director for Care Management for MDMC인 Candace Funderbirk와 Palliative Care Chaplain for MDMC인 Rev. David Impwi는 직원 대상 돌봄 프로그램과 호스피스, 완화치료 환자 대상 돌봄 프로그램에 대해 소개하는 시간을 가졌다. 기독교 목사로서 다른 종교를 가진 환자들에게 전도가 목적이 아닌 기독교적인 돌봄을 제공하는 것에 대한 어려움이 없는지에 대한 질문이 주어졌고 이에 David는 Chaplain으로서 주어진 역할이 전도나 종교의 권유가 아니라, 환자 본인의 평안함을 찾을 수 있도록 함께 있어주는 것이며 그것이 자신이 가진 그리스도의 사랑을 나누어 주는 일이라고 답했다. Faith Community Nursing 부서의 P.M. Debbie는 전문 간호사들이 지역 교회들과 연계하여 소외되기 쉬운 사람들에게 건강에 대한 상담과 돌봄을 제공하는 사회복지 시스템에 대해 소개했다. 이어진 시간에는 Residence Staff chaplain 들의 도움을 받아 병원 내부를 둘러보는 시간을 가졌다.
이번 수업의 담당교수인 박사무엘교수 (한국부 디렉터)는 이번에 2번째 이 병원 방문을 주선했고 이번 방문에 대해 이렇게 덧붙였다. “앞으로 다양한 영역에서 기독교 사역이 필요한데 엠디브 학생들에게 현시대에 크게 주목을 받고 있는 채플린사역의 현장을 보여주며 도전하기를 원했다. 이번 방문을 위해 병원에서 세심한 배려를 하였고, 병원장인 프레지던트 John Phillps를 비롯해 많은 스텝진들의 수고에 감사드린다. 학생들에게 병원 채플린사역에 대한 큰 도전의 시간이었다”고 전했다. 메디컬 시스템 안에서 행해질 수 있는 다양한 돌봄적 사역을 배울 수 있었던 이 시간과 병원 관계자들의 노력에 대하여 모든 학생들이 깊은 감사를 표했다. 참여했던 학생중 고하은 학생은 “두려움, 슬픔, 걱정, 근심, 긴장을 가지고 이 병원을 찾는 사람들과 동행해주는 것, 그들에게 목회적 존재로서 함께해주는 것이 우리의 일이라는 설명이 가장 와 닿는다. 육체적인 고통과 심적 영적인 고통을 한 사람이 다루어 줄 수는 없다. 이렇게 전반적으로 케어해 줄 수 있는 시스템을 구축하고 실천한다는 점이 놀랍고 인상 깊다”고 소감을 밝혔고, 김수현 학생은 “종교적인 강요나 권유 없이 하나님의 사랑을 실천하는 방법이 이렇게 여러가지의 형태로 사회 곳곳에 존재할수 있다는 것에 놀랐고, 학부를 졸업 후의 선택지가 늘어난 것 같다.’고 소감을 전했다.
