Faculty News

At its May 16, 2024 meeting, Central Seminary’s Board of Directors received and voted on several faculty recommendations.

The Board voted unanimously that Dr. Kathy Maxwell be elected as Professor of Biblical Studies. Dr. Maxwell has served as Central’s Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculty since July 2023. Prior to coming to Central, Dr. Maxwell served for 18 years in Christian higher education, both in the classroom and as an administrator. She most recently was Associate Professor of Biblical Studies and Chair of the Biblical Studies Department at Palm Beach Atlantic University in West Palm Beach, Florida. She also served as Associate Dean of the School of Ministry’s Traditional Undergraduate Programs. Dr. Maxwell earned her Ph.D. in New Testament from Baylor University.

President Pamela R. Durso noted, “For the past year, Dr. Maxwell has served an extraordinary academic administrator and seminary leader. We have been blessed by her presence among us. In addition to her strong administrative abilities, Dr. Maxwell has a significant record of excellence as a classroom teacher and as a scholar. In their election of Dr. Maxwell as Professor of Biblical Studies, Central’s Board of Directors recognizes and honors her gifts for teaching and for research and writing, and as a Central community, we celebrate future possibilities for our students to learn with her and from her.”

The Board of Directors also voted to approve rank promotions for the following:

Dr. Lindsay Bonebrake was promoted from Assistant Professor of Counseling to Associate Professor of Counseling. Dr. Bonebrake is the Director of the Master of Arts in Counseling program and has been on faculty since August 2020. In addition to teaching, supervising faculty, administering the counseling program at Central, Dr. Bonebrake, practices as a Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor in Missouri and Kansas. She provides supervision to intern level and provisionally licensed counselors working toward their state licensure. Dr. Kathy Maxwell, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculty, affirmed this promotion:  “Dr. Bonebrake excels in the classroom and as Director of the Master of Arts in Counseling at Central Seminary. Under her leadership, both students and faculty thrive in the MACO program, which continues to grow in enrollment and reputation. Dr. Bonebrake is highly respected by students and colleagues alike, and I am thankful for her commitment to preparing Central students to be competent, self-aware, and empathetic counselors.”

Dr. KwangSup Shin was promoted from Assistant Professor of Missional Church Studies to Associate Professor of Missional Church Studies. Dr. Shin joined the Central Seminary faculty in March 2014 as a supplemental instructor and was named as Visiting Professor in September 2015. He has provided administrative support for the Korean Language Program and currently is the Assistant Director of the Doctor of Ministry Program. Through his classes at Central, Dr. Shin works to help Christians rediscover the identity and role of the church and encourage them to participate in the mission of God in their everyday life where they are sent to. Dr. Kathy Maxwell, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculty noted, “Dr. Shin’s well-deserved promotion reflects his dedication in the classroom, as he has taught diploma, masters, and doctoral students over the past nine years. Most recently, he has demonstrated strength in administrative leadership through his work in the Doctor of Ministry in Missional Church Studies. I am grateful for Dr. Shin, who is known as an excellent colleague and who is committed to building strong relationships through theological education at Central and in our broader faith communities.”
