In a world where health security depends on international cooperation, the recent suspension of U.S. foreign aid has sent shockwaves across vulnerable communities. How will global health systems—already strained by conflict and economic instability—adapt to this abrupt shift?
Join Central’s Peace & Justice Ministry Certificate student cohort, in conjunction with the Buttry Center for Peace and Nonviolence, on Saturday, March 22 from 12-1:30 p.m. (CT) on Zoom for Beyond Borders: The Global Fallout of U.S. Aid Suspensions.
Featuring global peace and justice experts, as well as people personally impacted by the aid suspension, this public forum will examine the consequences of halted aid, the long-term risks to global health, and the need for alternative solutions. The conversation also will explore how people of faith can advocate for efforts that minimize harm and restore hope.
Speakers include:
- Sarah Lofgren: Asst. Professor of Medicine and Researcher at the University of Minnesota Medical School, specializing in HIV treatment outcomes in sub-Saharan Africa
- Anbessu Tolla (a Central Alum!): Executive Director at Fayya Integrated Development Organization, an NGO that responds to a variety of humanitarian crises in Ethiopia
- Andrew Long-Higgins: Team Leader at Global HOPE, the unit in the UCC that manages the denomination’s refugee and migration ministries, volunteer engagement, disaster response and recovery, and sustainable development support
- Alma Ruth: Founder and Director of Practice Mercy Foundation, working with asylum seekers along the Southern US border in Mexico
