Artificial Intelligence: How Does AI Work and Why Should We Care?
Date: June 9, 2025 12:00 pm
Location: Virtual
Artificial Intelligence (AI) impacts our lives in profound ways, both obvious and non-obvious. Large Language Models (LLMs) are the cornerstone of modern AI. These models can parrot most anything that has been authored on the Internet, enabling them to be a capable tool in a variety of domains. However, questions linger over if this paradigm represents actual intelligence or is instead sophisticated pattern matching that lacks true reasoning. Understanding the basic mechanics of AI can help us grapple with the limitations of the technology…and the consequences of trying to push those bounds. This lecture and discussion will chart what AI is and how its design impacts each of us.
