Buttry Center for Peace and Nonviolence Launched May 10
May 21, 2018
Central Seminary marked the launch of the Buttry Center for Peace and Nonviolence on Thursday, May 10, with an event which featured Dan Buttry as guest speaker. The Center, named for Dan and Sharon Buttry, Global Peace Consultants for International Ministries of the American Baptist Churches, USA, reflects the continuation of one of the characteristics Central’s education experience: To enable learners to serve humanity through compassionate and empathic action that leads to progressive, purposeful change.
At the event President Molly T. Marshall expressed her hopes that the Center would continue the good work which the Buttrys had initiated during their time with International Ministries. They will retire later this year but have much wisdom to pass on to the next generation of peacemakers. Dr. Buttry, who was awarded an honorary doctoral degree from Central Seminary in 2009 in recognition of his contribution to global peace, outlined hopes for the Center. He included the hope that training that will be offered on the Central Seminary campus in August would be successful.
On Friday morning, May 11, Buttry led a workshop, Conflict Transformation with Our Diversity, which was well attended. It included a preview for the Training for Conflict Transformation Trainers that will be happening August 7-16. More information about the August training can be found below.
