Kaleo: Call to Serve – Central’s Culture of Calling Events

Saturday, November 16, Central will hold the second in a series of events to cultivate a culture of calling with youth and their leaders from local congregations.  Initiated last year with the GPS – Go.Proclaim.Serve  event, this ongoing  ecumenical effort seeks to help young people from various faith communities explore questions of identity and purpose.

Kaleo: Call to Serve will take place on the Shawnee campus as well as at locations connected with two area community organizations – Bethel Neighborhood Center and AQUI, both of which serve in the Kansas City, Kansas, area.  The day will begin and end with worship held in the Baugh-Marshall Chapel.  From mid-morning to mid-afternoon the 40+ youth in attendance, as well as members of the planning team and of two of Central’s create Master of Divinity student groups will travel to the sites for missional projects.  The create students, who are participating as a part of the requirements for the course Promoting the Mission with Dr. Ron Carlson, will lead the students in a discussion about what they  hear and experience and how it relates to who they are called to be in this world and what God is calling them to do.

Leaders of youth and others from local congregations will participate in training on the Shawnee campus led by Brian Kirk (pastor and youth curriculum writer), Healthy Relationships, Healthy Teens, Healthy Church: Setting Boundaries in Your Ministry with Young People, as well as a session led by Seth Vopat (Central alum and local youth pastor).  Vopat recently reflected on the vision for Kaleo:

I am excited about Kaleo’s broader vision.  It’s not only about the event.  It’s recognizing the reality and need for providing opportunities for the youth workers and adult volunteers to deepen their own faith and explore possible resources to help them in their ministry settings.  It’s a time for all of us to learn together and lean more into God’s calling for our lives and the youth with whom we share that life.

This event is one of several initiated by Central’s Transformed by the Spirit Leadership Center which Dr. Entrekin directs and which is funded, in part, by a grant from ABC-USA.  Read more reflection after the event on her blog Wholly for the World on Central’s website.  On April 26, 2014, the series of Kaleo events will continue with Kaleo: Call to Be, which will be held on the Shawnee campus of Central Seminary.  Watch Central’s website, www.cbts.edu, and Facebook page for further information about ways Central is helping congregations become cultures of calling.  Check out the Kaleo Facebook page as well for continued posts related to upcoming events and issues around calling.
