The Church has had a long history of ignoring the largest growing minority group worldwide. People with disabilities are often pushed to the margins of society and the church. Disability is more than a diagnosis. It is also a rich culture of which the church is largely unaware. We will explore disability as a culture We will take a brief look into disability culture; its history, languages, worldviews, and theology. We will also explore the relationship people with disabilities have had with the church, the relationship the church has had with people with disabilities, and the positive and negative impacts both the Medical and Social Models of Disability have had on the church and its theology. We will be introduced to disability theology and explore its benefits to form the lives of the whole church. This presentation aims to address the cultural illiteracy regarding disability culture that exists on boards of ministry, among seminary students, local pastors, and congregations in the church at large.
Join Rev. Dr. Letiah Fraser as she presents a pilgrimage into the history, languages, worldviews, and theology of disability culture that is spiritually formative for the whole church.
