The second weekend of May is usually the highlight of the year for Central Seminary, and this year is no exception. The 2018 Commencement ceremony is happening at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 12, in the 21st Century Learning Center on the Shawnee campus and will be the culminating event for the academic year and all the graduates, as well as for the other highlight of the week, the launch of the Buttry Center for Peace and Nonviolence.
Starting on Thursday evening, May 10, at 7:00 p.m., friends of Central are invited to gather in the Baugh-Marshall Chapel for a celebration with Dan and Sharon Buttry, who serve as global peace consultants for International Ministries of the American Baptist Churches. At this time guests will hear the Buttrys’ hopes and dreams for the center, as well as how Central will be partnering with them to make those hopes and dreams a reality.
On Friday morning, May 11, from 9:00 a.m. to noon, the Buttrys will lead a workshop, Conflict Transformation with Our Diversity. While there is no charge for this workshop, registration is required. Visit cbts.edu for the link to the online registration. Central encourages early registration to ensure a space at the workshop. Workshop content will include a preview for the Training for Conflict Transformation Trainers that will be happening August 7-16 on Central’s Shawnee, Kansas, campus, located at 6601 Monticello Road.
Other events happening that same day include the Graduating Sisters’ Blessing at 3:15 p.m., a time for area women ministers, faculty, staff, and alumnae to give words of wisdom and encouragement to the women who will be graduating the next morning. At 6:00 p.m. Central Alums will have their annual gathering in the Baugh-Marshall Chapel followed by a reception in the Smith Courtyard afterward. It is a good time for alums to reconnect, meet and bless the graduates, and to celebrate the 50-year alums and alums of the year. An added bonus this year will be an interview between Dr. Ruth Rosell and Dr. Dan Buttry. Alums may register for the program and reception also through a link at cbts.edu.
Guests for Saturday’s Commencement service will have one more opportunity to hear from Buttry as he is featured as the Commencement speaker. Along with celebrating the accomplishments of Central Seminary graduates during the service, the seminary will also honor Dr. Ircel Harrison with the Distinguished Service Award.
All are invited to join the seminary for these events. For more about the Buttry Center, visit cbts.edu.
