Central Alums Lead Church in Reaching Community

Over the past few years, Central Seminary alums, Rev. Dr. Steve Neal (2003] and Rev. Cindy Boyer (2017) have forged a creative ministry partnership at First Baptist Church of Turner in Kansas City, Kansas. Steve has served as senior pastor since 2007 and Cindy has been a member for several years. She was officially called as Associate Pastor in 2017, but was already active in church ministry. Together they continue to lead the congregation in creative ways to develop transformational relationships with one another and in the community.

Rev. Dr. Steve Neal [center] cultivates relationships with neighbors living on the streets as part of the Caring Connections “Friends of Isaiah” ministry of First Baptist Turner.

All ministry happens at FBC Turner through an intentionally designed process called Caring Connections. Cindy serves as Caring Connections Coordinator.  Caring Connections consists of six distinct but interrelated outreach services, although they also continue to morph and change to meet ever-changing ministry needs. The underlying principle of these ministries is long-term relationship that leads to transformation.

Over the past three years, FBC Turner has also instituted a new constitution and ministry structure. The church chose to temporarily suspend nominations for a year and used that time to review and re-write the constitution and by-laws. After much discernment, the Constitution and By-Laws was approved unamimously. In 2017, this new structure and ministry process has begun to bear fruit. Congregational participation has increased, as has the influx of new members, with the majority of those being new followers of Jesus!

The church, under the leadership of Dr. Steve Neal as Senior Pastor, Rev. Cindy Boyer as Caring Connections Coordinator, and Laurie Neal as Pastor of Congregational Nurture and Care, moves into 2018 excited and eager to be engaged in ministry on the emerging frontier. Dr. Neal and Rev. Boyer are presently beginning collaboration on possible seminars and workshops that will offer ideas and resources for creative ministry in today’s frontier churches.
