Commencement 2010 Features Graduates from Three Sites, Installation of Dean, Hartsfield as Speaker

Central Baptist Theological Seminary held its 107th Commencement celebration on Saturday, May 15, 2010. The event was held at Holmeswood Baptist Church and was followed by a reception for the graduates and their guests. This Commencement was the first to include graduates from Central’s teaching sites in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Murfreesboro, Tennessee, as well as those from its Shawnee campus.

In addition to the Commencement exercises, the event featured the installation of Dr. Robert E. Johnson as Dean of the Seminary. The Dean of the Seminary serves as the chief academic officer of the school. The Dean gives oversight to all dimensions of the seminary’s educational mission including faculty, degree programs, curriculum, library services, extension sites, recruitment, and enrollment management.
Dr. Johnson is a noted Baptist historian and has given visionary leadership to innovative educational initiatives at Central. A perceptive interpreter of emerging trends in theological education and congregational identity, the Dean is shaping faithful ministry in his leadership at Central.
Central’s guest speaker for the event was
Rev. Wallace S. Hartsfield, Sr., Pastor Emeritus of Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church. Rev. Hartsfield was also awarded the Doctor of Divinity degree, honoris causa, in recognition of his years of faithful pastoral service to Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church, his prophetic role in the larger Kansas City metro area, his significant contributions in denominational ministries, and his concern f

or the church’s larger mission as it works for justice. The Doctor of Divinity degree is the highest honor bestowed by Central Baptist Theological Seminary.
Rev. Hartsfield’s faithfulness as a Christian leader has been affirmed by his Christian brothers and sisters. He has helped call Kansas City to racial justice and has contended for economic empowerment for minorities.
Several graduates were honored with awards as follows:

- Philip Wendell Crannell Award for Excellence in Preaching – LuAnne Prevost (TN)
- Harvey E. Dana Award for Excellence in Writing – Lindsey Osborne (KS)
- C. R. McBride and Katherine Willard Eddy Award for Excellence in Ministry – Lori Williamson (TN), Dori Brown (KS)
- Peace and Justice Award – Cliff Caton (KS)
- Lorenzo Streeter Award for Excellence in Biblical Interpretation – Tammy Jackson Gill (KS)
- Presidential Citation – graduate with highest GPA – Lindsey Osborne (KS), Tammy Jackson Gill (KS)
Many graduates will continue faithfully in ministries that have coincided with their seminary training, including associate and senior pastor roles, chaplaincy, as well as work in non-profit agencies. Others are planning further education, planting churches, moving into chaplain residencies, or seeking pastoral placements.
